FAQ
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art invented around 100 years ago in Brazil as an evolution of Judo and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu. It is now the number 1 grappling martial art in the World and is trained by every professional UFC fighter as an essential aspect of fighting / self- defence.
Grappling is the generic term for non striking based martial arts. Other grappling arts include Judo, Wrestling and Aikido. Brazilian jiu jitsu as it stands today uses techniques from every other grappling style. At Total when we say “gi BJJ classes” this simply means you will be learning all elements of grappling whilst wearing the martial arts uniform called a “gi”. And when we have “NoGi BJJ classes” this means you will be learning all elements of grappling whilst wearing t-shirt and shorts.
Yes. At the Adult Level there are White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black. You will be awarded them when you have improved enough to deserve them. We don’t charge for gradings or belts. The day you deserve it you will get it. BJJ Black Belts are very difficult to get, with the average time to earn a black belt being around 10 years. We pride ourselves at only giving belts out to those who truely deserve them, so it wont come easily, but those who do receive them know they fully earned them. We always advise our students to not worry about the belts, it’s our instructors job to do that. So just focus on improving and staying consistent.
No! Although we have produced some of the very best competitors in UK BJJ, most of our members don’t compete. Competition is a great yardstick to demonstrate improvement, but it’s not compulsory at all. Our focus is getting everyone to the highest standard they can be, regardless whether they chose to enter a competition or not.
